She was best known for her portrayal of Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who and later in her very own (and quite excellent) spin-off series, The Sarah Jane Adventures. She was my favorite companion, and I will miss her terribly.

Lis got her start as Sarah Jane with my Doctor, Jon Pertwee. I remember being upset as a kid that Jo Grant had left the Doctor to get married to some hippie guy at the end of The Green Death. The final shot of that story, with the Doctor sadly driving Bessie off into the sunset was pretty depressing for kid Sven, but my mood changed for the better next Saturday night, when Sarah Jane Smith burst onto my TV screen in The Time Warrior. She was spunky and feisty and I would grow to love her so much that I would try to name the new family dog after her.

Right from the beginning, Sarah Jane was different from her predecessors in that she didn’t trust the Doctor immediately. She spends half of that first story thinking that he’s the culprit behind a rash of disappearing scientists. The Doctor earns her trust, and I think the bond between them is stronger because of it.

Lis Sladen’s chemistry with Jon Pertwee makes for a great double act. It’s still a little strange to me that there’s only one season of the two of them together, because in my childhood mind they had so many more adventures together before the 3rd Doctor regenerated. And it seems I wasn’t the only one that felt that way. The combo would appear again in the 20th Anniversary Special, The Five Doctors in 1983 and just a few years after the show was cancelled, out of all of the possible Doctor and companion combinations, the 3rd Doctor and Sarah Jane (along with the Brigadier, played by the recently departed Nicholas Courtney) were reunited for new audio adventures broadcast by the BBC.

When Pertwee’s Doctor dies in Planet of the Spiders, Barry Letts wisely chose to have the Brigadier and Sarah Jane there beside him. It’s the truth of Lis’s performance during the Doctor’s death that sells the scene. The Brig, God bless him, has seen this all before and remains largely unfazed, but for Sarah Jane, it’s a real death and Lis plays it as such. And that’s really the secret of Sarah Jane’s success; that Elisabeth Sladen is an amazing actress.

After Pertwee, she anchors the show during Season 12 until Tom Baker’s Doctor has found his legs. To me, Tom’s debut story Robot, will always be overshadowed by super snoop Sarah Jane Smith doing her very best Lois Lane impression, zipping around in a convertible and sneaking into the mad scientists’ laboratory. While the Doctor’s being silly in a nightshirt, Sarah Jane is doing what she does best, investigating.

When the new series returned, I wasn’t completely sold on it until School Reunion. Embracing the show’s past and allowing one of its finest actors to return was probably the smartest move that Russell T Davies ever made on the new show. It proved to skeptical old Whovians like me that these new guys could get it right, and maybe the new series deserved a second look. All it took was the magic of Lis Sladen and a rusty tin dog.

Sadly, I never got the chance to meet Lis, and I was hoping that I would get a chance to someday. A number of the creative personnel for The Sarah Jane Adventures were at Gallifrey One this year, and in every single panel, every single person attested to how great it was to work with her. It felt as if she was a guest there after all just because everyone was talking about her so much all weekend (in addition to the Sarah Jane cosplayers of all stripes). She was a presence there and I think that she’ll remain a presence in the Doctor Who community long after she’s gone with the magnificent legacy of her work on not just one, but three amazing shows that she’s left behind.

“A tear, Sarah Jane?” For you, yes. Goodnight, Elisabeth Sladen. Goodnight, Sarah Jane Smith. I hope somewhere Jon Pertwee and Nicholas Courtney and Ian Marter and Barry Letts are just as happy to see you as we are sad that you are now gone. Thanks for everything.

Elisabeth Sladen (1 February 1948 – 19 April 2011) – R.I.P.

LEGION FLIGHT RING POSTCARD DRIVE!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TCWZ9E29nhY/S4WxwTOyv_I/AAAAAAAAASE/jTTvBgxHxqU/s320/legionring.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441951168101269490" />

Today's revelation of a promotional White Lantern ring has got me a little wound up. In talking with a few of my Twitter pals, I have decided on a course of action for us to possibly get some promotional LEGION FLIGHT RINGS on or around the launch of Paul Levitz's new LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES book. And the solution is this:

Recently, DC mounted a postcard drive to see if readers were interested in renumbering the WONDER WOMAN book to #600. DC received over 800 postcards (as of their last post regarding this) and the change in numbering will happen this year. What worked for Diana’s fans can work for us, Legionnaires.

To put in simply, just mail a postcard filled out like this to DC:

LSH FLIGHT RING
c/o Dan DiDio
1700 Broadway
New York, NY
10019

WONDER WOMAN fans only needed 600 postcards to make their change happen, we can do this, Legionnaires.

I would also like to remind DC that a plastic LSH FLIGHT RING has already been tooled, so there is no cost to them to design or sculpt a new one. This plastic LSH FLIGHT RING I’m referring to is the one that came with the DC DIRECT action figures of COSMIC BOY, LIGHTNING LAD and SATURN GIRL (the picture at the top of the post is that very ring, modeled by the suave and erudite Bully, the Little Stuffed Bull).

So buy a postcard and get busy -- the 31st Century is counting on you!

*This drive has not been endorsed by DC Entertainment, Warner Brothers or their subsidiaries. The vibe of the book reminds me of WALKING DEAD a bit, but with absent aliens instead of omnipresent zombies. Mass devastation that ignites a new quest for survival seems to be the main thrust. I didn’t read the main story, as I’m mainly interested in the backup.

If you’re familiar with the boys’ work over at ACTION AGE COMICS or CORNFED CANNIBAL, the first thing that you’ll notice is how grounded and realistic the tone and action of this post-invasion story is. There are no skateboarding half-vampire detectives or Hitlerfists here, just the very real and immediate concerns of three teenage geek boys and their harebrained plan to increase their chances of scoring with the girls of their ravaged town.

Their plan consists of faking an alien reappearance (hence the title) and then faking a retaliatory strike in the armored vehicle that they’ve A-Teamed up. Some bad timing on the geeks’ part leads to a misunderstanding that the Hero-Wagon is actually the invaders themselves. And the geeks’ own underestimation of the strength and resourcefulness of the town’s womenfolk (who have attained Y THE LAST MAN levels of empowerment) almost leads to their own demise.

One of the strengths in conveying the character of our heroes and female militia-folk lies in the great dialogue by Messrs Sims and Bowers. The women have become strictly no nonsense in regards to defending their town, whereas the boys are still fantasizing about living the dream that is PORKY’S 2 and their speech evinces this. The teenagers sound like real teenagers with a dash of some standard Simsisms throw in (guys, son, I’mma). The red-headed Mayor of Shawsville brings some drill sergeant level thunder to the ass-chewing she gives the boys once she discovers their plot. And that’s some really revealing character action.

Rusty Shackles’ art for this issue is just plain amazing. I’ve been lucky enough to get some commission work done by his Rustiness and have enjoyed seeing his art evolve since we’ve become pals. That evolution continues to shine here in this story. For starters, Rusty’s vehicles (especially what I’ve dubbed the Hero-Wagon) look perfectly balanced and functional. Much like horses, vehicles are an enemy that some comic artists have difficulty grappling with, but that’s just not so with Mr. Shackles. His Hero-Wagon reminds me of a cross between the armored vehicle in DAMNATION ALLEY (another post-apocalyptic tale that also involves bugs) and the Dreadnok’s own THUNDER MACHINE from G.I. JOE. I wonder if the resemblance is intentional. I bet it is.

What I really love best about Rusty’s art is his character work. People use the word “cartoony” sometimes to describe very expressive and what some consider non-realistic art. I wouldn’t call Rusty’s art “cartoony” or “non-realistic” and here’s why: just look at his women. Rusty takes the high road when it comes to drawing women. Every woman in the story has a different height and build. Some of the women have ample bosoms, but are not top-heavy compared to the rest of their frame. This is very important when drawing the female form, to not just render women with Barbie’s fantastical and physics-defying measurements.

I remember a customer from when I worked at my local LCS that dropped JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, because of a certain Michael Turner cover that had Power Girl’s chest jutting out of her costume in the most ridiculous way. You’re not getting any improper anatomy like that with Senor Shackles, just check the panel where the Mayor orders her girls to get grab their guns. Each girl has a different body type that works. I especially like that Rusty’s not afraid to give a girl a little heft in her thighs, something that we don’t often see outside of Amanda Conner’s or Ross Campbell’s work.

Rusty’s true art gold is in his character’s expressions. I want to compare the acting going on here to elements of Amanda Conner’s style by way of Kevin Maguire. There’s also a bit of Will Eisner and Kurt Schaffenberger here in the way that the characters’ very animated expressions contrast with the functionality of a realistically depicted world and that this makes the characters seem more vibrant and alive when compared with their ordinary surroundings.

Final Observations: Teddy totally looks Sims (straight from the WRA vs. screen), and the red-shirted, no-named teenager resembles a sort of hippy Rusty. I’m willing to bet that Nicky looks like Chad Bowers at least a bit.
Great work, fellas! I’m hoping there’s more greatness coming down the pipe soon, especially THE HARD ONES… I’ve been waiting too long.

Ratings:

Story: Better than KNIGHT RIDER, but not quite THE WIRE.

Art: They’ll be handing out the SHACKLES Award for Comics Supremacy any day now.

Please leave a comment if you'd like. And, yes, that's a PHONOGRAM poster on the wall behind me.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TCWZ9E29nhY/ShY1eXh-g5I/AAAAAAAAAQk/GFn5jZywwsg/s320/ECCC+2009+013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338513204123173778" />Miss Hutchinson is seen here wearing the season's latest Tara McPherson design.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_TCWZ9E29nhY/ShY1WrjXGtI/AAAAAAAAAQc/jIqvygpELyo/s320/ECCC+2009+014.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338513072058735314" />Arriving at the con, we met up with Barry and watched him draw for a few people that were also waiting for a sketch from the previous day. Barry was very sociable and nice to everyone (something some other creators could try at cons) and was genuinely happy to chat with the fans and draw them whatever they wanted. Veronica was up first; her request: Barry Allen. This pencil and ink drawing of Barry Allen by Barry Kitson far exceeds what any normal person would consider to get as just a "sketch" at a con. We both thought this was absolutely stunning!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TCWZ9E29nhY/ShY0UG1eSUI/AAAAAAAAAQM/YTYZ3J8py88/s320/ECCC+2009+018.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338511928331225410" />Then Barry breaks out the watercolors and paints it too! Awesome!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TCWZ9E29nhY/ShY0MxmssGI/AAAAAAAAAQE/8KsvqcFatFQ/s320/ECCC+2009+020.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338511802373025890" /> The finished Barry Allen by Barry Kitson for Veronica!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 233px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TCWZ9E29nhY/ShY0DdahjwI/AAAAAAAAAP8/zrPEaLraYkc/s320/kitson-barry+allen.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338511642334433026" />So, what did I ask Barry for? Barry says "I wish we knew of a decent bar to go to, last night's choice was terrible". Then I say "I told you that I work at a bar, right?". To most comic creators I've met, that's like manna from Heaven.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_TCWZ9E29nhY/ShYzVw3EZZI/AAAAAAAAAPk/WWXWXGMzrG4/s320/ECCC+2009+023.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338510857280447890" />Cut to the Whisky Bar, where Barry tells me about the time he met Tom Peyer.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_TCWZ9E29nhY/ShYy-miT2OI/AAAAAAAAAPc/MzhuCw7WVMg/s320/ECCC+2009+035.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338510459372034274" />I'm trying to keep this a family friendly site for now, but the look on my face says it all I think. Chad & Miki are the mods over at barrykitsonart and they were also art contributors to the BEST of the LEGION OUTPOST book from TwoMorrows. Miki & Chad have been helping Barry sell his original art pages, of which I bought four (my first ever original art buy)! I bought two inked pages from FLASH & GREEN LANTERN: THE BRAVE & THE BOLD (by Mark Waid and some Peyer guy), a pencils-only page from JSA: STRANGE ADVENTURES (it's got Ted Knight and Alan Scott on it and they're fighting ROBOT NAZIS!), and a great page from the recent "Threeboot" Legion of Cosmic Boy telling the U.P. Council where to stick it. I'll make a short blog post of those pieces with pictures of the art and actual issue and page numbers with comparison shots from the comics as well soon.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TCWZ9E29nhY/ShYyaGQil3I/AAAAAAAAAPE/v2-BmxtEfSs/s320/ECCC+2009+039.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338509832232277874" />
Thanks again to Barry (for the amazing paintings), Chad & Miki (for the art buying tips), Vasilis (for drawing Veronica an awesome Batman) and a very special thanks to Becky Cloonan for drawing me a whole new page in my defective copy of DEMO that had twenty something blank pages in it. Apparently, Lana Lang knows about some species of insect that can communicate telepathically with its parents. We here at the Comic Book Confessional would really like to know the name of this insect species, but have this terrible feeling it doesn't exist (and it's not named in the issue).

This part's great. What could possibly make your life more exciting? What else but being the girl friend of Superboy? And all this certainly makes Lana Lang’s existence anything but dull!

Lana’s father is Professor Lewis Lang. Her mother‘s maiden name was Potter; her brother, and Lana’s uncle, is none other than Professor Phineas Potter, the famous eccentric inventor.

As a child, little Lana played with young Clark Kent, and sometimes witnessed his super-deeds when he was Superbaby; however, she was too young to realize he was doing seemingly impossible stunts.

Soon after she started school, Lana’s parents began traveling over the world, taking their daughter with them. Between trips, they returned for brief stays in Smallville, their home town; but it was not until Lana was in her teens that they came back for good.

It was soon after this that Lana first met Superboy. She immediately noticed his resemblance to her schoolmate, Clark Kent. (See Footnote No.1) Ever since, Lana has used every trick she could dream up to prove his identity. Being both inventive and impulsive, Lana has come up with some ingenious and, not infrequently, dangerous schemes. It has taken super-thinking on the Boy of Steel’s part to foil her.

Superboy did reveal his alter-ego to Lana’s great-grandmother, Laura Langdon, during a time-trip to 1876. (2) He little guessed that she would record this in a diary which her descendant, Lana, would one day find. The secret would have been out if Superboy’s Superdog, Krypto, hadn’t flown away with the page containing it before Lana could read it.

Lana became friends with young Lois Lane when the two met at Camp Hiawatha. (3) Neither guessed that, when they grew up, they would be rivals for the love of Superman. But a brief look at a time-scanner machine later showed Lana the future, when reporter Lois Lane would be known as Superman’s girl friend. The young red-head then concocted a scheme to arrange things so that Lois would not become a reporter. (4) However, her scheme backfired and Lois went on to study journalism at Raleigh College.

Lana’s efforts to attract Superboy have sometimes taken elaborate and bizarre forms. Once, with the connivance of Prof. Potter and a fake time machine, she impersonated Cleopatra. (6) However, the blue-clad boy spotted her imposture and took her into the past, where she met the genuine Cleopatra.

Lana once became a movie star when she was signed as the lead in a jungle picture. (5) Unfortunately, she soon developed a terribly swelled head. Superboy got himself cast opposite her and, to teach her a lesson, stole every scene from her. When the picture was released, it was the Boy of Steel who received top billing. But Lana got still better billing, where it really counted - on the cornerstone of the hospital wing which was built with her earnings from the movie.

Lana has met other super-heroes in her time. One of these was Star-Boy, of the Legion of Super-Heroes. (7) At this time, Star Boy had more powers than Superboy himself, due to contact with a strange comet. Later on, this wore off, leaving him with only his power of making things super-heavy. Discovering his secret identity of Thom Kallor, Lana threatened to reveal it unless he helped her in a scheme to make Superboy jealous. Star Boy gave in and took Lana to the 30th Century, where they faked a romance. Superboy was not fooled, though; and, with the help of a girl who was going with Star Boy at the time, he arranged for Lana to become the victim of the “Green-Eyed Monster.”

When Lana grew up, she moved to Metropolis, where she got a job as a TV newscaster with station WMET-TV. And, of course, she entered her friendly rivalry for Superman with Lois Lane.

As both teen-ager and adult, Lana has had super-powers. Once, on her birthday, Superboy got two packages mixed up and inadvertently gave Lana three capsules that could endow her with different super-powers. (8) Thanks to this goof, the Boy of Steel had his hands full for a while. Later on, he gave her flying power for a short time with a belt which transferred to her some of his ability to defy gravity. Another time, Prof. Lang brought back from Africa a remarkable belt which gave Lana super-powers when she wore it. (9) She became Gravity Girl; but she ended this career when she learned the belt made her invulnerable only to metals. As a grown-up, she once received super-powers via a blood transfusion from Superman, in order to guard her from an attempt on her life by Brainiac. (10) Before you tell us we made a boo-boo, let’s make one thing clear - Superman punctured his skin with one of his super-hard fingernails to give the transfusion.

But Lana’s greatest super-role is that which she enacts in this issue of SUPERBOY - the identity in which she’ll be back with more thrilling adventures in the future - the INSECT QUEEN!

1. “When Lana First Suspected Clark Kent.”
[SUPERBOY #87]
2. “The Three Ages of Superboy.”
[SUPERBOY #103]
3. “Lois Lane Meets Superboy.”
[ADVENTURE COMICS #261]
4. “The Girl Who Saw the Future Superboy.”
[SUPERBOY #90]
5. “Lana Lang, Hollywood Star.”
[ADVENTURE COMICS #312]
6. “Superboy’s Romance with Cleopatra.”
[ADVENTURE COMICS #291]
7. “Lana Lang and the Legion of Super-Heroes.”
[ADVENTURE COMICS #282]
8. I read a lot of new comics and there’s plenty of other blogs out there that bash the new stuff with far more venom than I could muster. So, if that’s what you’re looking for, this probably won’t be the blog for you.

If you think Superboy mind tricking pest Lana on a regular basis is pretty funny than this is the blog for you.

In closing, I am going to be upfront about being a bit of a DC boy at heart, but don’t worry - I’ll get to MARVEL soon enough!

So let’s fire up this Time Bubble fellow Legionnaires - let the crazy begin!

Svengali Lad
